2025 ACSA Superintendents Symposium

The research is clear; implementing Structured Literacy instruction will enable large numbers of students, including Multilingual Learners (ML-EL's) who are currently struggling, to become proficient in reading. This session will explore the evidence-based rationale for making the change and provide participants with the current research.

But successfully implementing a major change in reading strategy requires more than research. It requires strong leadership from the superintendent and the school principal to establish structures that will support teachers’ efforts. Assuming no new resources, how can the school day be configured to ensure that students have daily, intensive, small-group instruction on their individual level? How can teachers feel confident that they have the knowledge and skills to successfully master the strategies in Structured Literacy? What data needs to be collected? How often? What feedback should be given to teachers?

This workshop will provide a roadmap to making the change with ideas, curated resources, and access to professional development opportunities from leaders who have paved the way.
